Mary, Mary Quite Contrary

Mary Mary quite contrary,

How does your garden grow?

With silver bells and cockle shells

And pretty maids all in a row.

Gardening in the Greenhouse in South Carolina

Greenhouse gardening is a real learning experience for me. This is a completely new interest that I have never had before. My interests have changed after first deciding that I wanted a greenhouse.

1.       For fun, a hobby, exercise.
2.      To grow my own vegetables and be more self-sufficient.
3.      To learn something new.

Now I find myself reading to learn more. I didn’t even know what temperature that I should keep in the greenhouse. Then I found out it would need a heater in the winter, and fans in the summer.

Right after it was finished in February 2014, I started planting seeds, watering, fertilizing, having a lot of fun watching them as they germinated, and began to break ground, and emerge as tiny seedlings. It happened faster than I expected, and it was still a little too early to put them out. They continued to grow in the greenhouse. Finally I wanted to put them out, thinking it was warm enough and we would have an early Spring like we usually do in South Carolina. But, naturally this year was atypical and no sooner that I put them out we got very cold weather! That was the end of my newly planted seeds. So I started over.

After 2 attempts, I finally got the number of plants that I needed for the gardens.  I had quite a few tomato plants so I took them to church and gave dozens away. I was a hit with all the seniors. They loved getting a few tomato plants and I was happy to share. 2015 I plan to do the same. More to follow.
